PCO Biofiltration

Reduce pathogen loads with a highly effective molecular shredder.

Aspergillus, Botrytis and Powdery Mildew are something every cultivator is familiar with as their presence can lead to failed tests and mandatory destruction of product. One of the problems is that these pathogens are ubiquitous – they’re everywhere. They’re in your hair and on the hands of every employee at every facility.

Having a “culture of clean” is critical to keeping fungal colonies from proliferating. It’s easy to clean the mop sink, bathroom, and break room but what you can spray on flowering plants is limited by state jurisdictions and when you spray can dramatically effect quality and quantity of the harvest.

One excellent approach in a cultivation facility is to exchange all the air in the room every 3 minutes via the HVAC system ductwork and pass it through a MERV 13 filter (or better) that captures particles 1 micron and larger. As the air continues it will pass through a Photocatalytic Oxidation (PCO) biofiltration panel.

PCO panels use UV light as a catalyst to create hydroxyl radicals that act like a molecular shredder. This active air cleaner ensures that all the air delivered to the plants is free of pest and pathogens. This would render Aspergillus as well as other causes of failed safety tests like Botrytis and Powdery Mildew inactive. It is also designed such that none of those hydroxyl radicals escape into the air steam and damage terpenes and cannabinoids.

If a duct mounted solution is not possible, standalone or in-room units are also available. Like standalone dehumidifiers, they only treat the air in their immediate surroundings, so adequate air mixing in the room is critical to treat a higher percentage of total air. One method of assisting with in-room air mixing are Sub-Canopy Airflow Systems.

The PCO compound utilizes the entire airstream when installed in either the duct work or in the air handler itself. The air cleaner is used to reduce airborne biologics and VOCs in an airstream.
